It has been reported that a 53 year old inmate of the Matara Prison has died after being hospitalized with symptoms of meningitis. A week ago, an inmate of the Matara Prison was reported dead due to suspected meningitis and 16 other inmates were hospitalized.

In what could be seen as a bid to woo Tamil voters ahead of the 2024 LS elections, BJP national president JP Nadda on Saturday released a stamp commemorating 200 years of Indian-origin Tamils living in Sri Lanka now.
As part of the sequence of religious programmes held in view of the 73rd Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Navy, a spiritual event was conducted at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya on 29th December 2023, with the attendance of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera and the President of Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Mala Lamahewa.
