The National Tsunami Early Warning Center of the Department of Meteorology issued an alert that a magnitude 6.6 earthquake has struck in the Indian Ocean at a depth of 10km off Sumatra at around 10:49am today (30). The coastal areas were declared safe as there was no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka.
