A court in northern France has sentenced 14 Sri Lankan nationals to prison for operating a people-smuggling ring across Europe  part of a continent-wide attempt to crack down on the lucrative criminal networks.

One person was shot dead in Rajagiriya today, the Police said. The Police said the shooting incident took place in Buthgamuwa, Rajagiriya. Sri Lanka Navy, on Thursday (19 Jan.), seized two consignments carrying a collective of nearly 1,000 kilograms of smuggled turmeric in Jaffna, while four suspects have also been apprehended.
The Nanu Oya Police are currently looking to arrest the driver of the bus involved in the fatal accident that took place on the Radella Shortcut Road in Nuwara Eliya yesterday (20 Jan.).
