On September 2, the Sri Lankan community in British Columbia, Canada, came together for a day of joy, camaraderie, and culinary delights at the Burnaby Sperling North Cricket Ground in Burnaby, Canada. The ‘Royal 2023 Summer Fiesta’ was a celebration of Sri Lankan culture, sportsmanship, and the spirit of togetherness, organized by the Royal College Alumni Association of British Columbia (RCAABC).
The event kicked off with a hearty Sri Lankan breakfast, featuring the beloved Kiribath, setting the tone for a day filled with flavours from the island. Participants and families were treated to a feast for lunch, followed by an evening snack paired with soothing Ceylon Tea, the perfect refresher after a day of sports and laughter. Cricket enthusiasts showcased their skills on the field, while Tap Rugby added a touch of athleticism and excitement to the festivities. Family games brought generations together in friendly competition, creating unforgettable memories.
The Royal College Alumni Association of British Columbia (RCAABC) was founded in June 2019 by former students who initially gathered in 2018 to host former teachers. RCAABC welcomes individuals who have studied at Royal College Colombo 7 or Royal Junior School for at least two years. Their objectives include building connections among alumni, raising funds for Royal College and Sri Lanka, promoting cultural and sports activities, supporting relocating old Royalists and families, and networking with other Royal College alumni nationally and internationally. The association also seeks to reach out to Old Royalists in Alberta and Washington, strengthening the global Royal College community.
Royal 2023 Summer Fiesta was not just an event; it was a testament to the Sri Lankan spirit thriving far from home. It brought the community closer, allowing everyone to savour a taste of Sri Lanka and the joy of being part of a vibrant global Sri Lankan family.
